Landscape irrigation professionals who specialize in water-efficient irrigation can now add a new title to their names. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has created the WaterSense label for contractors and irrigation specialists who have undergone special training on water efficiency.
About EPA’s WaterSense® Program
WaterSense is a partnership program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Its mission is to protect the future of our nation’s water supply by promoting and enhancing the market for water-efficient products and services. Currently, there are more than 300 WaterSense labeled toilets, 1,000 labeled faucets and faucet accessories, and more than 700 irrigation partners. WaterSense labeled products must achieve independent, third-party testing and certification to prove they meet EPA’s rigorous criteria for efficiency and performance.
Two existing certification programs offered by the Irrigation Association have received the WaterSense label for their emphasis on water-saving techniques: the Certified Irrigation Designer (CID) program and the Certified Irrigation Contractor (CIC) program.
In 2008, WaterSense helped consumers save more than 9.3 billion gallons of water and more than $55 million in water and sewer bills. That's enough water to supply 100,000 average households for a year!
